About the Program

Graduate Studies in English at the University Of California, Davis

The M.A. in Creative Writing

The core of the Creative Writing Program lies in the sequence of three intensive workshops in poetry and/or prose, conducted by a faculty of internationally acclaimed writers.  Students also choose a variety of academic electives both in English and other departments designed to enhance their own knowledge and craft.  In the second year students write a creative book-length thesis. The program is enriched by the presence of visiting writers and faculty.

Distinguished permanent faculty offer a wide variety of courses, workshops and seminars.  Students are encouraged to develop their own specialized courses of study under the direction of individual faculty members.

At UC Davis interdisciplinary study and research is strongly promoted .  Through a combination of seminars and examinations, students may pursue a Designated Emphasis in any of three interdisciplinary areas: Feminist Theory and Research, Native American Studies or Critical Theory.  Students may  petition for their own special areas of emphasis. Davis' proximity to the Bay Area also allows students to take courses offered at UC Berkeley.

In addition, graduate students may participate in Art of the Wild ( a summer community of writers at Squaw Valley) and Humanities and the Environmental Sciences ( a research program in which the humanities collaborate with programs in the environmental sciences, for which UC Davis is world-renowned.)

Financial support comes through fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships  and readerships. The department has an excellent training program to prepare students to teach expository writing, creative writing or introduction to literary interpretation.  Students also have the opportunity to receive informal mentoring through assisting a faculty member in lecture course. Stipends for graduate students assistants are competitive with those offered by other public research universities.
