The William Van O'Connor Library

General Books

Note: The O'Connor Library is currently undergoing some reorganization of materials.  Maps and labels affected by this reorganization will be updated when possible.  For further guidance, see Finding Your Way Around the Library.

Most of the books held in the O'Connor Library are currently divided into the British and American Literature sections; each section is organized chronologically.  Start with Old English, located on the bookcases immediately to your left as you enter the library, and make your way through the centuries.  American Literature starts about halfway through the bookcases on the north side of the library.

Search Tips: Once in the library, to locate works of interest, search the "englibrary" catalogue located on the library computer by title, author, or year, among other fields.  For further tips on locating resources in this collection, see Using the Computer Catalogue: Searching for Books.

Other books fall into different sections--the Critical Theory Collection, Non-English World Classics, Reference Materials, and the Rhetoric Collection--and are located in the areas specified below:

* The Critical Theory Collection sits in the inside southeast leg of the U of bookshelves (following the

Journal Collection and the Rhetoric Collection).

* Non-English World Classics are located in the bookcase standing against the northeast wall.  Some

volumes are in translation, while others are in the original language.

* Reference Materials can be found on the far side of the bookcase that stands before you on your left

as you enter the library (back-to-back with the Faculty & Emeritus Publications Collection).

Reference materials may also be found in the bookcases located along the south wall of the library,

between the computer and librarian's desks.

* The Rhetoric Collection is found in the inside middle leg of the U of bookshelves (between the Journal

Collection and the Critical Theory Collection).
