Marlene Clarke

Dr. Clarke received Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English from San Francisco State University and a Ph.D. in English from UC Berkeley. While completing her doctoral studies and writing her dissertation on Middle English romances, she taught first-year writing and reading classes (English 1A and Engliish 1B), the equivalents of UC Davis's English 1 and English 3. She also taught for several years in Berkeley's Subject A program.

Since coming to UC Davis in 1983, Dr. Clarke has taught a range of writing classes, including English 1 and English 3, English 18 (a class in style), English 101 (Advanced Composition), English 102 (Writing in the Disciplines), English 104B (Legal Writing), and English 104D (Writing for Elementary and Secondary School Teachers). Until its cancellation, she also taught English A. During her time at UC Davis, Dr. Clarke has also taught a number of classes in medieval literature and developed and taught Humanities 8, a class in the retelling of narratives from a variety of cultural, ethnic, gender, and temporal perspectives. She has also served in a number of administrative positions and as one of the early editors of Prized Writing.

Publications:

  • Currents of Inquiry: Readings for Academic Writing (with Nancy Morrow), Mayfield, 1998; a collection of current academic essays on the topics of the American university, work and play, media and literacy, and law and justice.
  • A series of writing workbooks for elementary and middle school students, published by Harcourt Bace Jovanovitch.
  • A series of remedial writing workbooks for adult learners, published by David S. Lake Publishers.
  • Retellings, current, (with A.G. Clarke); a broad-based literature anthology that encourages readers to consider how stories get told and retold from a variety of cultural, ethnic, gender, and temporal perspectives. The book is under contract with McGraw-Hill and is expected to appear in the summer of 2002, with a copyright year of 2003.
